A Once-in-a-Generation Experience: The August 2026 Solar Eclipse
 

Looking further ahead, August 2026 brings a rare astronomical event — a total solar eclipse visible from parts of Europe.  On Wednesday 12 August 2026, Spain and Iceland will lie in the path of totality, making them two of the best places in Europe to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon. Getting there

Reaching La Gomera is easy and very straightforward. There are regular flights from Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Belfast to Tenerife and Gran Canaria with Aer Lingus and Ryanair.  From there, Binter operates short inter-island flights from both Tenerife and Gran Canaria to La Gomera, taking around 30 minutes.  Alternatively, the Fred. Olsen Express ferry from Tenerife is a lovely way to travel — just under an hour from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera, with the option to bring a car or travel as a foot passenger. It feels relaxed, scenic and very much part of the holiday experience.

Silbo Gomero - The Whistling language

La Gomera is famous for Silbo Gomero, one of the most extraordinary forms of communication in the world. This unique whistling language was developed centuries ago so people could communicate across the island’s deep ravines and valleys, where voices simply wouldn’t carry. Using whistles that mimic the rhythm and pitch of spoken Spanish, messages can travel up to three kilometres in the open air.  What makes Silbo Gomero even more remarkable is that it’s still alive today. It’s taught in schools across La Gomera, recognised by UNESCO as an important part of world cultural heritage, and occasionally demonstrated in villages and restaurants. It’s a perfect example of how the island’s culture evolved in harmony with its dramatic landscape — practical, ingenious, and deeply rooted in local life.

The fortified city of Cuenca has been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO. Visit it and explore some of its most iconic locations:- The Hanging Houses,Cuenca. Inside you can find the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art.- To get the best panoramic view of the houses, you must cross San Pablo bridge. If you can, explore the area both in the day and at night. The Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park has many interesting corners. To discover the source of the river Júcar, you must travel to Tragacete, a beautiful village located in the centre of a valley, about 65 kilometres from the city of Cuenca. On the way to the source, you can enjoy a 20-metre waterfall, a true wonder to behold. At the top, to the right of the waterfall, an old mill will draw your attention. Less than 30 minutes by car from there, you will arrive at the source of the river Cuervo. Through a path between willows and hazelnut trees, you reach two waterfalls. The first is smaller and the preamble of the one you will see below, a breathtaking waterfall at any time of the year and especially in the rainiest months. From there, you need to climb another few metres to glimpse the spring from which the river flows.

El Hosquillo Experimental Hunting Park

This 910-hectare park was created to study and preserve various species of fauna and learn more about our natural resources.Many species of birds like golden eagles, peregrine falcons, vultures or eagle owls, as well as deer, mouflon, mountain goats or wild boars live in the park. However, you may be drawn to the brown bears and Iberian wolves, both endangered species.To visit, you must book a three-hour guided tour. An ideal plan for both children and adults.

If you are hard to surprise, we are convinced that the Enchanted City of Cuenca is bound to do it. This is a spectacular setting with rock formations that were created over thousands of years by the wind, water and ice. A 20-metre monolith, a huge arch called the “Roman Bridge” or “the face of man” are some of the 13 figures you can see on your route here. The Ventano del Diablo viewpoint is near the Enchanted City. It offers one of the best views over the Júcar river canyon.

There are cities that celebrate Christmas — and then there is Zurich, which seems to elevate it. I recently took the short flight from Dublin to Zurich to attend the turning on of the famous Lucy Lights above Bahnhofstrasse, and as promised this elegant city was transformed in an instant. Twenty-three thousand shimmering crystals float overhead like a river of starlight. Locals pause mid-stride, visitors like myself look up in awe, and suddenly you realise something: Zurich doesn’t do Christmas as an event — it delivers it as an experience.

People think Zurich is all banks and businessmen — and yes, the suits are there — but that’s a million miles away from the Zurich of today. Zurich is a city that I discovered over 30 years ago and it remains surprisingly great fun today: chocolate on every corner, music drifting out of cafés, a lake that looks like it’s been filtered by Instagram, and medieval streets that were clearly designed by someone who liked a good wander. Switzerland may run like clockwork, but Zurich is the part that knows how to show you the best time. It isn’t built for stress — it’s built for strolling, sipping, nibbling, nosing about and generally enjoying yourself.

This is a city designed for pleasure. For lingering. For tasting. For listening. For looking.

When I spoke with Joan on Travel Talk, she told me how her remarkable journey began as an engineer at the Kennedy Space Center, helping prepare shuttles for launch. One day, during a routine conversation, the director of shuttle engineering turned to her and said, “You’d make a great astronaut.”  At first, she laughed it off — after all, astronauts were “ten feet tall and really smart,” she joked. But after the third nudge, she realised he wasn’t kidding. So she applied. Out of nearly 6,000 candidates, she was among the 120 invited to interview for NASA’s 1994 astronaut class. She didn’t make it the first time, but instead of walking away, she asked what she could do better. The advice? “Get more education.” So she did — earning another Master’s degree — and tried again. The second time, she made it.  As Joan told us, “Sometimes the first no just means the timing isn’t right.”

From engineer to astronaut, from the launch pad to orbiting Earth — Joan Higginbotham’s story is a powerful reminder that persistence, preparation, and a little push from the universe can take you anywhere.  As one of only five African American women ever to travel into space, Joan feels proud to have blazed a trail and she looks forward to a future where those distinctions are no longer counted.

I recently woke up in one of the most central rooms in Dublin. My view from the Rubrics building revealed a bustling student campus. Staying here is to rest inside a living chapter of Irish history. The Old Library, home of the Book of Kells and the Long Room, is just a short walk away—anchor points for both - Dublin’s literary heritage and Trinity’s architectural grandeur  @visit_trinity

In short my window looked out onto centuries of scholarship framed by lush greenery and Georgian rooftops—trees swaying gently over temperate lawns, stone arches and silent steps where history once walked. Breakfast in the Buttery was substantial and homely and this mature student felt very welcome indeed. Trinity College Dublin, founded in 1592, is a highlight of Dublin, known for its stunning architecture, historical significance, and world-renowned library. Key attractions include the Book of Kells, the Old Library's Long Room, and the overall campus atmosphere. I highly recommend a stay here, after all who doesn't want to say that they had a little stint at Trinity College 🤣

The Rubrics

This was the building where Ed stayed recently.  Built between 1699 and 1705, the Rubrics is the oldest building on campus and Ireland's oldest surviving purpose-built residential building. It's design has been attributed to Thomas Burgh who designed the Old Library.

It took 4 years to restore and conserve this magnificent and historical building. Fronting onto Library Square and with New Square to the rear, the Rubrics Building is at the heart of our historic campus.

Over the last 320 years, this building has gone through a number of transformations. The Rubrics formed part of the original quadrangle of red – bricked residential buildings around Library Square, which included the Old Library to the south. After the 1850s, the other buildings of the quadrangle were gradually demolished to leave the free-standing Rubrics Buildings. The 3rd floor was added in 1894.

As Ireland's oldest surviving purpose-built residential building, it has continually been used as residential accommodation for the University. With the conservation efforts of all involved it will continue to do so far into the future. The building will now be home to new staff while they ‘find their feet’ in Dublin, as well as short-term accommodation for visiting scholars, student accommodation and a new reading room with facilities to enable retired academic colleagues to continue to participate in academic projects.

Both the Rubrics and Chief Steward’s House have been substantially completed on time and within budget.

Conservation

The retrofit need was driven by the University's brief to achieve modern performance standards in a historical building while respecting the heritage and continuing its use as accommodation. Working with Passive Building Energy Consultants, a series of in situ, lab-based and desk-based measurements and analyses were undertaken to obtain a thorough understanding of the existing building physics before work began. The project will be a pathfinder for future projects involving our heritage estates as The Rubrics demonstrates the opportunities around the adaptability of our heritage assets when traditional building crafts are married up with innovative and sustainable technologies.

• Sir Walter Scott, author of Ivanhoe and one of the great literary voices of the 19th century, was among the earliest guests of note.

• William Makepeace Thackeray, best known for Vanity Fair, also rested his pen within the hotel's elegant walls.

• Charles Dickens, the great Victorian novelist, stayed here in 1858 during his lecture tour – undoubtedly observing the city’s character, which surely found its way into his tales.

• Grace Kelly, the Hollywood actress turned Princess of Monaco, visited during her Irish heritage tour.

• Mel Gibson, who filmed Braveheart in Ireland, was also spotted enjoying the hotel’s warm welcome.

• Billy Connolly, the Scottish comedian and actor, left his own signature brand of cheer during his stay.

• Gregory Peck, Maureen O'Hara, John Wayne, and many more have all passed through the Imperial's doors, giving it a red-carpet résumé few hotels in Ireland can match.

  He worked on several projects using photography, sound, and video, exploring the island's unique landscape. 

• Consulting on cultural and artistic projects:

  Aguilar continued to collaborate with various public institutions on artistic and cultural initiatives after leaving his role as director of the Cultural Department of the Cabildo. 

He expresses his connection with the island‘s landscape in his paintings, photographs, musical compositions and architectural artworks. He is also an important representative of the ecology movement on the island and is seen as a spiritual successor of Cesar Manrique.  From 1963 to 1968, he studied art in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. After that he taught painting and drawing for six years in Arrecife. Since his main activity of oil painting on canvas didn‘t satisfy him personally, he devoted himself increasingly to a lifelong passion, Photography.

He developed a new technique in which he worked on the photographs with sand, first applying glue to the surfaces, then designing them with the sand grains. From an initial idea, he composes landscapes with different sand – fine white grains from the beach Caletón Blanco and coarser dark from Playa Quemada. The surfaces are made of many thin layers and only selected areas exhibit a coarser structure. With a final polish, he gives an even and flawless completion.  He actually applied this technique in painting on wood, for example on such that is traditionally used for ship building. Also these sand pictures on wood are distinguished by a particularly harmonious surface.

The bareness of the island, the primitiveness, the purity – these are the main sources of Ildefonso Aguilar‘s inspiration. On a broken piano he sets his observations, his impressions, his feelings into music. While he sits at this instrument, you can actually see how he listens to nature, picks up short sequences and puts them into music.

“In my pictures it is about expressing something fundamental and this I can achieve with various approaches: by going macroscopically close to the elements or by seeing them at an infinite zoom at the horizon or by a synthesis of both points of view. It is clear that my pictures often have a certain tendency to become abstract.“  Through his travels to Iceland the multimedia artist is now also inspired by the nature of the largest Volcanic island on earth, which has much in common with his home. He finds inspiration in the specific nature of the islands of Lanzarote and Iceland.

We take a look at how one man helped protect the soul of this volcanic island and create a truly unique vision of art, nature and architecture

César Manrique (1919-1992) was born at Arrecife, Lanzarote, an island on which his art was to leave an indelible mark.  After finishing his studies at the San Fernando Fine Arts Academy at Madrid (where he lived from 1945 to 1964), he exhibited his work on a regular basis both in Spain and abroad. In the early nineteen fifties, he ventured into non-figurative art and studied the properties of matter, concerns that would predominate in his compositions, bonding him to Spain’s contemporary “informalist” movement.

Despite the artist’s abstraction and matter-centrism, the plastic roots of his pictorial production lie in Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape, transformed into a sort of non-realist naturalism which, rather than a copy of the original, is an emotional translation of its significance. “I try to be the free hand that forms geology,” he wrote.  In 1964, he moved to New York, where he held three solo exhibitions in the Catherine Viviano gallery. The direct contact with American abstract expressionism, pop art, new sculpture and kinetic art afforded Manrique a visual culture essential to his subsequent creative development.

In the mid-nineteen sixties, upon his return to his native island, he undertook a series of spatial and landscape artistic projects that were not only entirely new at the time, but constituted a statement of his plastic and ethical principles. These actions and interventions aimed to turn the landscape and the island’s natural attractions to value, with a view to generating a new international image and portrayal that would form part of Lanzarote’s adaptation to the tourist economy.

His new aesthetic ideal, called art-nature/nature-art, integrated different modes of artistic expression visible in Manrique’s landscape art: most prominently, Jameos del Agua, Mirador El Río Lookout, Cactus Garden and Timanfaya. Manrique endowed these interventions, intricately associated with the tourist industry, with economic and social functionalism unprecedented in Spanish artistic culture. He created works of this nature on other islands and beyond the Canary archipelago: lookouts, gardens, reconditioning of degenerated areas, shoreline reform, etc. All these works are imbued with the artistic principles he held most dear: respectful dialogue between art and the natural medium and between local architectural values and modern conceits.

The German Travel Market 2025 was onboard the stunning MS Grace, MS Inspire and MS Joy - we sailed from Frankfurt along the majestic River Rhine to Beethoven's Bonn passing the pretty towns of Boppard, Bad Zalzig, Koblenz and Rudesheim - I flew to Frankfurt with @aerlingus and was a guest on Scylla Line's MS Grace www.scylla.com - such a great way to discover the Rhine Valley - Bonn is a really great city and full of great things to see and do including Beethoven's Birthplace and Museum, we did a great tour with Gabriele Zöller, a really excellent tour guide in Bonn, the Path to Democracy and they have some world class museums and art galleries and beautiful tree lined streets and boulevards with a great café culture. 

To this day, Bonn and the 'Bonn Republic' are symbolic of diplomacy, democracy and Germany's rise following World War II. Authentic sites of Germany's political past now open to visitors include Palais Schaumburg, the Chancellor's Bungalow and the former parliament chamber. The city also has many exhibits that rekindle memories and illustrate the historical and political background to events between the post-war period and reunification.

The Dorint Hotel Bonn is a great place to stay for a few nights.  The Art Museum in Bonn is really stunning with some amazing German Artists on display there with their priceless collections.
