Ireland's Epic Hikes with Lonely Planet

Travel Talk with Ed Finn

Saturday, 15 May 2021 - 10 minutes

Lonely Planet have named seven Irish hikes among the best in Europe in a new book about "the best walking adventures on the continent."   With inter-county travel now back open, these will serve as the perfect bucket list for summer 2021 - Lonely Planet names seven Irish hikes among the best in Europe.  Given that Ireland is a veritable hiker's paradise, it's no surprise that seven of our most "epic" hikes have been included.  The book includes some famous routes from the Iberian Peninsula to the Arctic Circle and without giving away too much you can see which Irish hikes have been included below.  Without giving too much away, some of these include -  The Dingle Way, The Wicklow Way, Mayo’s Great Western Greenway, the 126km Grand Canal Way and the Burren’s short-but-sweet Mullaghmore Loop.  The author describes Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast Way as “a multi-day coastal walk blessed with gorgeous geological wonders”. And I can personally concur with that -  In this follow-up to Epic Bike Rides and Epic Drives, we share our adventures on the world's best treks and trails. Epic Hikes is organised by continent, with each route brought to life by a first-person account, beautiful photographs and charming illustrated maps. Additionally, each hike includes trip planning advice on how to get there, where to stay, what to pack and where to eat, as well as recommendations for three similar hikes in other regions of the world.  I was lucky enough to have a sneak preview of this "Go To" TOME.  Available from Amazon and all good bookstores and outlets -  Amazon
