Death Toll Continues To Rise Worldwide From Covid-19

The number of people infected by the virus worldwide approaches 2.8 million across 211 countries and territories.

At least 50,100 people have died of Covid-19 in the United States, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

It comes as some states begin relaxing restrictions on nonessential businesses, despite 872,000 confirmed cases.

Covid-19 cases globally have passed 2.7 million, while deaths stand at over 193,000.

Europe has been the worst hit continent, with Spain recording 22,500 deaths, Italy with 25,000 and France with 21,800 fatalities.

In the UK, where a new testing website for key workers crashed after just 2 minutes, the Covid death toll has risen to 19,500.

Another 587 people have died in England, 64 more in Scotland, while Wales announced its biggest daily increase, with 110 new deaths.

Human trials on a vaccine have begun, with Oxford scientists hopeful it'll prove safe and effective by September.
