From Holland to the Hudson: Discovering New York's Beautiful Backyard
What connects the canals of Amsterdam with the magnificent Hudson Valley in New York? More than 400 years of extraordinary history, remarkable personalities, breathtaking landscapes and fabulous food!
This week on The Sunday Show, Ed Finn travels to Amsterdam, where he meets Dawn Hopper, Managing Director of Tourism Market Development at Destination Dutchess, for a fascinating journey through one of America's most beautiful and historic regions.
Our story begins in 1609, when explorer Henry Hudson sailed up the mighty river that would eventually bear his name, opening a remarkable chapter in the Dutch history of New York.
From there, we discover the charming village of Rhinebeck, the extraordinary legacy of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt in Hyde Park, and the magnificent riverside estates of America's Gilded Age, where the country's wealthiest families created their grand country retreats.
But there's another delicious reason to explore Dutchess County!
The Hudson Valley is one of America's great culinary destinations, home to the world-famous Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, where legendary chef, author and television personality Anthony Bourdain trained before becoming one of the world's most celebrated food and travel storytellers.
With its beautiful villages, historic mansions, outstanding restaurants, vineyards, scenic landscapes and fascinating heritage, Dutchess County offers visitors an unforgettable taste of authentic New York — just 90 minutes north of Manhattan.
Join Ed and Dawn as they uncover the remarkable connections between Holland and America and discover why the Hudson Valley is affectionately known as New York's Beautiful Backyard.
From Dutch explorers to American presidents, Gilded Age glamour to world-class gastronomy — this is a journey through history, culture and some of the most beautiful countryside in America.
