Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 Opens in Belfast

Belfast has made history by hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann for the very first time, welcoming thousands of visitors to the opening celebrations at Belfast City Hall. Running until 9 August, the eight-day festival is the world's largest celebration of Irish traditional music, song, dance and culture, with more than 200 events taking place across the city.

The opening ceremony featured performances by Ards CCÉ, the Reilly School of Dancing, cross-community choirs and a spectacular showcase celebrating the theme of "Sharing Traditions." Throughout the day, audiences enjoyed performances from renowned acts including The Hothouse Flowers, Goitse, Sharon Shannon & Her Big Band, and the Blackwater Céilí Band.

President Catherine Connolly, alongside First Minister Michelle O'Neill, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, and other civic leaders, welcomed visitors from across Ireland and around the world. The President described the festival as a celebration of "what we have in common" through the universal language of music, song and dance.

The city centre has been transformed into a giant festival venue, with the free Gig Rig stage outside City Hall, hundreds of live music sessions, dance performances, storytelling, workshops, family events and more than 90 community fringe events taking place across Belfast's neighbourhoods.

Businesses throughout the city have invested heavily in preparing for what many expect to be one of the biggest tourism events Belfast has ever hosted, with bars, restaurants and hotels anticipating crowds comparable to St Patrick's Day every day for eight consecutive days.

To accommodate the festival, large pedestrianised zones, road closures, additional public transport services, park-and-ride facilities and accessible shuttle buses are operating throughout the week.

With its welcoming atmosphere, vibrant programme and international visitors, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 marks a landmark moment for Belfast, showcasing the city as a world-class destination for Irish culture, music and hospitality.
