After 144 Years, Barcelona’s Sagrada Família Is Finally Complete

There are very few buildings in the world that can genuinely stop you in your tracks. The Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal… and then there’s Barcelona’s magnificent Sagrada Família. Now, after an incredible 144 years of construction, Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece has finally reached its intended height with the completion of the spectacular Tower of Jesus Christ, marking the end of one of the most remarkable architectural stories ever told. For generations, visitors have watched cranes surround the basilica as work continued year after year. Today, that extraordinary journey has reached its climax.

Standing 172.5 metres high, the completed tower now makes the Sagrada Família the tallest church in the world, transforming Barcelona’s skyline while fulfilling Gaudí’s original vision. Construction first began in 1882, but it was Antoni Gaudí who completely transformed the project after taking over as chief architect a year later. He devoted the final decades of his life to the basilica, famously saying, “My client is not in a hurry.” He knew he would never see the building completed.

When Gaudí tragically died in 1926 after being struck by a tram, less than a quarter of the basilica had been built. Wars, political upheaval, funding shortages and, more recently, the Covid-19 pandemic all delayed progress. Yet generation after generation of architects, engineers, sculptors and craftsmen remained committed to finishing his masterpiece. Today, that vision finally stands complete.
