Spain’s Natural Paradise and the Original Camino

Tucked away on Spain’s lush northern coast, Asturias feels like a different country entirely. Here, emerald-green mountains tumble into dramatic Atlantic beaches, ancient villages cling to hillsides, and life moves at a wonderfully relaxed pace. My journey began in the elegant city of Oviedo, the historic capital of Asturias and the starting point of the world's first Camino pilgrimage.
Before setting out on the Camino, I travelled into the heart of the region to the sacred sanctuary of Covadonga. Nestled beneath towering limestone peaks in the spectacular Picos de Europa, Covadonga is one of Spain's most important pilgrimage sites. The basilica, the Holy Cave and the stunning mountain scenery create a sense of peace and spirituality that is hard to describe. It is also regarded as the birthplace of the Spanish nation, making it a place of both religious and historical significance.
From there I ventured into the beautiful Ruta del Alba, one of the most scenic walking trails in northern Spain. Following a crystal-clear river through forests, gorges and ancient shepherd paths, it showcases Asturias at its very best. The fresh mountain air, rushing waterfalls and complete tranquillity make it one of the finest walks I have experienced anywhere in Europe.
Back in Oviedo, it was time to follow in the footsteps of King Alfonso II, known as "The Chaste", who became the first pilgrim to walk to Santiago de Compostela over 1,200 years ago. His journey created what we now know as the Camino Primitivo – the Original Way. Walking out of Oviedo along quiet country lanes and through picturesque villages, you quickly understand why so many consider this the most beautiful and authentic of all the Camino routes. The scenery is breathtaking, the crowds are fewer, and every step feels connected to history.

The best news for Irish travellers is that Asturias is now easier than ever to reach, with direct Aer Lingus services linking Dublin and Oviedo. In just a few hours, you can swap busy city life for mountain trails, sacred pilgrimage routes, incredible food, world-famous cider and some of the most unspoilt landscapes in Europe.

If you think you know Spain, think again. Asturias is Spain's natural paradise – and the Camino Primitivo is where the story of the Camino truly began.
